The way I see it, Rocketboom was a much more young cable tv type of program with the difference in the budget and the way it was broadcasted and received… And I am not saying that it wasn’t very important, it really made a turn-point in the way last mile broadcast can be done.

But now with this new Amanda Across America, you will have a lot more, because now the content and form is much more creative, different and experimental. I could say that also it is much more of a vlog than rocketboom ever was.

I hope to write more on this later…

Music Industry Threatens to Pull Plug on Apple

Or like oil companies asking automobile manufacturers to share their profits.

According to Apple, the original goal of the iTunes Music Store (ITMS) was to sell more iPods. In fact, they didn’t expect it to be profitable at all – but now it commands a sizable share of Apple’s quarterly revenue.

Having observed their behavior in the past, I fully believe that the music industry really believes that they are doing Apple a favor and that they can cut Apple off.
If they close iTunes, iPod users will just rip their own music (and share it) leaving 0 revenue.

It’s probably just a bluff, but if the Music Industry does go through with this it would be incredibly stupid of them. I know it would be contrary to their agreements with Apple Records, but if the music execs do go ahead with this, I think Apple should start selling music directly from the musicians rather than going through the labels. They could simultaneously reduce the prices and give the musicians much more than they get under their current contracts.

the other day i read that a band edited by Sony, had to publish in their site an help text explaining how to do if you wanted to rip theirs audio cd for the computer… it was fun to read about that!

and because if you really think about it, it represents a lot of things…

the global market is the most obvious, but as most of the ikea furniture, including beds, are still on wood (or based on), you can assume people still prefers sleeping on wood and in more natural “environments”…

maybe we should start an inquiry about that…

Encontrei quase por acaso umas páginas na Internet sobre a construção de sofisticados projectores de vídeo LCD caseiros. impressionante!! A maioria não é muito portátil, mas aparentemente a qualidade e características que se conseguem atingir é muito boa mesmo.

Numa das galerias de fotos, há para todos os gostos e até já vendem kits com as várias peças necessárias… muitos são em madeira e tudo, alguns bem integrados na mobília, e há um que até inclui o computador para vêr os vídeos armazenados nele.

Estas páginas encontrei-as nuns comentários numa questão proposta no Engadget.

This half-hour long version of She Be She Strike contains all the great excerpts I posted earlier, from the Rolling Stones cover to the inexplicable Eskimo Marijuana segment. There’s more talking and singing over records, live in-studio music on the jews harp and guitar, a cover of Oh Susannah, an Eskimo skiffle number, Christian sprituals (!), and an incredible audio collage (which starts at the 25:40 mark) mixing Inuit throat singing games with a male Anglo singer whose voice I recognize but whose name eludes me.

a versão de 30 mins tem 28.4 MB mas parece valer a pena. as cassetes com esta emissão começaram a circular nos anos oitenta…, fico sem perceber bem, quando isto terá exactamente acontecido.

Keeping Presidents in the Nuclear Dark
(Episode #1: The Case of the Missing “Permissive Action Links”)

Last month I asked Robert McNamara, the secretary of defense during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, what he believed back in the 1960s was the status of technical locks on the Minuteman intercontinental missiles. These long-range nuclear-tipped missiles first came on line during the Cuban missile crisis and grew to a force of 1,000 during the McNamara years — the backbone of the U.S. strategic deterrent through the late 1960s. McNamara replied, in his trade-mark, assertively confident manner that he personally saw to it that these special locks (known to wonks as “Permissive Action Links”) were installed on the Minuteman force, and that he regarded them as essential to strict central control and preventing unauthorized launch.

When the history of the nuclear cold war is finally comprehensively written, this McNamara vignette will be one of a long litany of items pointing to the ignorance of presidents and defense secretaries and other nuclear security officials about the true state of nuclear affairs during their time in the saddle. What I then told McNamara about his vitally important locks elicited this response: “I am shocked, absolutely shocked and outraged. Who the hell authorized that?” What he had just learned from me was that the locks had been installed, but everyone knew the combination.

The Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Omaha quietly decided to set the “locks” to all zeros in order to circumvent this safeguard. During the early to mid-1970s, during my stint as a Minuteman launch officer, they still had not been changed. Our launch checklist in fact instructed us, the firing crew, to double-check the locking panel in our underground launch bunker to ensure that no digits other than zero had been inadvertently dialed into the panel. SAC remained far less concerned about unauthorized launches than about the potential of these safeguards to interfere with the implementation of wartime launch orders. And so the “secret unlock code” during the height of the nuclear crises of the Cold War remained constant at OOOOOOOO.

After leaving the Air Force in 1974, I pressed the service, initially by letters addressed to it and then through congressional intermediaries, to consider a range of terrorist scenarios in which these locks could serve as crucial barriers against the unauthorized seizure of launch control over Minuteman missiles. In 1977, I co-authored (with Garry Brewer) an article (reprinted below) entitled “The Terrorist Threat to World Nuclear Programs” in which I laid out the case for taking this threat more seriously and suggesting remedial measures including, first and foremost, activating those McNamara locks that apparently he and presidents presumed had already been activated.

The locks were activated in 1977.

It is hard to know where to begin, and end, in recounting stories like this one that reveal how misinformed, misled, and misguided on critical nuclear matters our top leaders have been throughout the nuclear age. A multitude of such examples can, and will, be described in forthcoming columns

Secret Service questions student on drawings

PROSSER, Washington (AP) — Secret Service agents questioned a high school student about anti-war drawings he did for an art class, one of which depicted President Bush’s head on a stick.

Another pencil-and-ink drawing portrayed Bush as a devil launching a missile, with a caption reading “End the war — on terrorism.”

The 15-year-old boy’s art teacher at Prosser High School turned the drawings over to school administrators, who notified police, who called the Secret Service.

“We involve the police anytime we have a concern,” Prosser Superintendent Ray Tolcacher told the Tri-City Herald newspaper.

Secret Service agents interviewed the boy last Friday. The student, who was not arrested, has not been identified.

The school district disciplined him, but district officials refused to say what the punishment was. Tolcacher said the boy was not suspended.

The artwork was apparently part of an assignment to keep a notebook of drawings, according to Kevin Cravens, a friend of the boy’s family.

The drawing that drew the most notice showed a man in what appeared to be Middle Eastern-style clothing, holding a rifle. He was also holding a stick with an oversize head of the president on it.

The student said the head was enlarged because it was intended to be an effigy, Cravens said. The caption called for an end to the war in Iraq.

A message left by The Associated Press with an after-hours duty officer with the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., was not immediately returned on Monday.

“If this 15-year-old kid in Prosser is perceived as a threat to the president, then we are living in ‘1984′,” Cravens said.

Tolcacher insisted it was not a freedom of speech issue, but a concern over the depiction of violence.

“From what I saw, [school officials] were right to be concerned,” Prosser Police Chief Win Taylor said.

Carlos Picoto from Microsoft TV spoke and demonstrated a wild and wacky enhanced TV product from Portugal’s TV Cabo/Panavideo network. The hosts and crew were clearly having way too much fun. They order roses and pizzas and stuff for each other via interactive TV while they’re hosting the ITV show, and the stuff is delivered on set. Much craziness. Why can’t American TV be this fun? Link to workshop website.

I was a part of one of these, and let me tell you it was a riot. One of the rules was you couldn’t initiate conversation with anyone and that answers to questions were scripted. We stayed together for 5 minutes and dispersed, no one having said a word. It was surreal but wonderful, especially the looks on the normal people’s faces, trying to figure out exactly what was going on.
