This one should be really great to watch!

… Later on the beginning of August there will be the Non European film show.

Creating the programme of the 2008 Film Shows was not an easy task. Every year our choice of films is partially determined by their availability on the national distribution market. During the past year, our distributors have considerably lowered their stakes on films from both Asian and South-American countries, not to mention African countries, whose cinema production is very rarely and often never screened in Portugal.

One of the results of this play safe policy is that the programme for the Non-European Film Show weighs heavily on the side of North-American productions. We have endeavoured to be as diverse as possible in our selection, whilst remaining faithful to our main criteria of choice, which are quality and sensitivity of treatment of the subject. We hope that our programme, and the ambiance created around it, will appeal to you!

My greetings to André Viane for organizing these events and also for having these small interview with me.

These small movie was recorded on my nokia e61i phone so i am sorry for the bad quality pictures on it. but i suppose that content can be more important.

As for what André Viane says in the video and very very briefly and not so accurate (sorry André):

He says that more people come to see the movies here on the summer open air shows than in the downtown cinema. He thinks that must be because of the good and balanced selection they make and also and mostly because of the ambience of these particular place.
The idea behind these open air projections also includes our common vision of “cinema paradiso” of Giuseppe Tornatore.
After that he tells us a small story the renovation of the place and that he is against the complete renovation of the open space, because it would spoil the magic.

nokia n95 with microphone

Ok. Here we have two ways of plugging a “normal” microphone to the Nokia N95 and vlog away with good sound capture…

I found this two videos that show two solutions to these problem:

Here’s a quick video that shows how you can use the Nokia Audio Controller AD-43 as an external microphone on a Nokia N95.
You can connect the Nokia headphones to this and then use the Audio Controller to talk while making phone calls or recording video.
The manual “Some headsets do not include a microphone.”
I’m interested in finding out if anyone has connected a microphone to this device to help record better audio when recording videos.
I know Nokia made a special microphone adapter for some AP news trials, but I have not been able to learn more about that yet.

Many mobile journalists use N95 because of its quality video vice. The problem has been that there is need of a external microphone. Here is the solution. This video shows the use of radio mic and ordinary kabel mic.

And I think the Nokia Reuter’s kit also has some adaptor for the microphone…

Hope it suits you this simple solutions and i hope to see you videos with better sound off course.
I will try when i have one of those n95, mine is a e61i that captures 352×288 i think…

UPDATE (2008/05/06):
A new entry about external mic on N95, this time from shelbinator.com.
I just want to add that the difference between the terminal colors for input has to do with the different adaptors used, because shelbinator uses a nokia adaptor and Gunnar uses a generic adaptor and i suppose thats why the color/terminal used is different.

This is an exhibition that is called Shalechet (fallen leaves) and the author is the israeli artist Menashe Kadishman, you can find it on the Jewish Museum Berlin (www.juedisches-museum-berlin.de).

I hope to post some more videos about Berlin in the next days, i love(d) that city, its really alive and kicking. …oh, and its huge also!

For this NaVloPoMo experiment that we are doing, I really want to learn how to do the editing and get good pace and story telling. At the same time I intend to review some of my miniDV and HDV archive and explore that as a way to try new things with these old material. Most of these tapes were solely recorded and never played…

I went and fetched one and a “half” tapes of a visit I did to Fátima Sanctuary in Portugal, I have to say that I am not catholic and so I went to see what was the scene. It was on May 13th of 2000 and on those particular days the Pope John Paul II visited the place and told the third secret of Fátima.

I want to do some movies about this trip, but today is to late and so I leave you with just this, I recorded this minutes after getting there for the first time.

Why would the big four music companies agree to let Apple and others distribute their music without using DRM systems to protect it? The simplest answer is because DRMs haven’t worked, and may never work, to halt music piracy. Though the big four music companies require that all their music sold online be protected with DRMs, these same music companies continue to sell billions of CDs a year which contain completely unprotected music. That’s right! No DRM system was ever developed for the CD, so all the music distributed on CDs can be easily uploaded to the Internet, then (illegally) downloaded and played on any computer or player.

In 2006, under 2 billion DRM-protected songs were sold worldwide by online stores, while over 20 billion songs were sold completely DRM-free and unprotected on CDs by the music companies themselves. The music companies sell the vast majority of their music DRM-free, and show no signs of changing this behavior, since the overwhelming majority of their revenues depend on selling CDs which must play in CD players that support no DRM system.

So if the music companies are selling over 90 percent of their music DRM-free, what benefits do they get from selling the remaining small percentage of their music encumbered with a DRM system? There appear to be none. If anything, the technical expertise and overhead required to create, operate and update a DRM system has limited the number of participants selling DRM protected music. If such requirements were removed, the music industry might experience an influx of new companies willing to invest in innovative new stores and players. This can only be seen as a positive by the music companies.

Much of the concern over DRM systems has arisen in European countries. Perhaps those unhappy with the current situation should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free. For Europeans, two and a half of the big four music companies are located right in their backyard. The largest, Universal, is 100% owned by Vivendi, a French company. EMI is a British company, and Sony BMG is 50% owned by Bertelsmann, a German company. Convincing them to license their music to Apple and others DRM-free will create a truly interoperable music marketplace. Apple will embrace this wholeheartedly.

Apart from the Conference (program and speakers), there are going to be four workshops on September 26 to 27th:
Designing the Next Generation of Web Applications with Peter Merholz
Creativity with Dannie Jost & Henriette Weber Andersen

This event wasn’t possible without the perseverance of Pedro Custódio (organization), and I personally thank him for trying to do some shifting in Portugal, unfortunately I couldn’t visit him and this great event.

I wish all the best for this event and for the lucky ones that are going.

Amanda Congdon is back and in my opinion is much better than it was before.

The way I see it, Rocketboom was a much more young cable tv type of program with the difference in the budget and the way it was broadcasted and received… And I am not saying that it wasn’t very important, it really made a turn-point in the way last mile broadcast can be done.

But now with this new Amanda Across America, you will have a lot more, because now the content and form is much more creative, different and experimental. I could say that also it is much more of a vlog than rocketboom ever was.

I hope to write more on this later…

Today I read some things that really got to me, and this time aren’t about bush…

SPIT KIT

the first one is from UK and talks about people spitting in bus drivers face and DNA kits, or ’spit kits’ as they call it!?!? got it in from boing boing – “London bus-drivers carrying DNA kits for catching face-spitters London bus-drivers are being equipped with DNA sample kits with which to capture spittle when irate passengers spit on them.”.

SAVED PEOPLE vs USING BOAT W/ PERMISSION

the second story is from USA and Hurricane Katrina… it seems that the guy, named Marc Morice, who saved same people with a boat, is being sued for using it without permission…

“I don’t know where we would be today if it weren’t for him,” Molly Gordon, Gordon’s wife of 65 years, said Friday.

The lawsuit contends that boat owner John M. Lyons Jr. suffered his own distress, in the form of “grief, mental anguish, embarrassment and suffering . . . due to the removal of the boat,” as well as its replacement costs.

Molly Gordon said she was baffled by the lawsuit.

“This man should be so grateful he had a boat that saved lives,” she said.

During a news conference at his Napoleon Avenue home Friday, Morice and his attorney, Joseph A. Marino III, displayed photographs and showed video Morice took in the neighborhood, which showed desperate high-water scenes accompanied by a bone-chilling soundtrack of screams and pounding, apparently from people trapped inside attics.

Lyons’ boat, an 18-foot, 1998-model 180 Sea Sport, was one of three Morice said he commandeered after water started rising in the neighborhood. Morice said one of the other boat owners told him he was glad Morice had been able to hot-wire his boat — Morice said he actually got instructions on how to do it from Yamaha customer service — and the other boat owner apparently has not complained.

I don’t get it why supposedly normal people still buys those ten euro stolen bicycles, do they really think they’re smarter than the rest of us?

If it’s about price, why don’t you buy them recycled 2nd hand as I do? I leave the site here for you – www.recycledbicycles.org , I do think that 30-50 euros for a bike is a nice and honest price, don’t you?

Moradores de Campo de Ourique, em Lisboa, reagiram hoje com indignação e tristeza ao início da demolição da casa onde morreu o escritor Almeida Garrett.

O prédio de dois pisos nos números 66-68 da Rua Saraiva de Carvalho, uma rua estreita e de sentido único em Campo de Ourique, Lisboa, começou esta manhã a ser envolvido por andaimes e tapumes, numa obra a cargo da empresa Sotencil.

Os azulejos brancos e azuis que compõem a fachada do edifício, que pertence à empresa Pilarjardim – Gestão Imobiliária, propriedade do actual ministro da Economia, Manuel Pinho, já começaram a ser destruídos.

O cartaz do licenciamento municipal afixado na fachada indica que a obra de construção de um edifício com cinco pisos destinado a habitação demorará 180 dias.

“No dia 9 de Dezembro de 1854 falleceo n’esta caza o poeta portugues Visconde D’ Almeida Garrett”, lê-se na placa, agora tapada por um cartão, colocada acima da porta de entrada, que recorda a passagem do escritor por aquela casa, que ajudou a construir.

“Isto é um crime”, exclamava, indignada, Fernanda Gomes, 67 anos, para quem a casa deveria ser conservada de forma a albergar uma casa-museu dedicada à memória do percursor do Romantismo na literatura portuguesa.

Garrett é “um pilar da nossa história, é o primeiro poeta que divulgou o amor”, considerou a moradora.

Bertina Ramalho, 77 anos, que mora no prédio contíguo ao de Almeida Garrett, também se mostrou revoltada com a demolição, sugerindo que fosse feito “o mesmo que fizeram com a casa do Fernando Pessoa”, transformando-o num “museu, com espaço para encontros e colóquios”.

Empunhando uma faixa em que se lia “Vergonha! Não à destruição da Casa Garrett”, Ana Palma, eleita pelo Bloco de Esquerda (BE) na Assembleia de Freguesia de Santa Isabel, lamentou a decisão da Câmara de Lisboa de autorizar a demolição.

A representante do Bloco sublinhou que, quer a Junta de Freguesia, presidida por João Miguel Ferreira (PSD), quer o movimento de cidadãos Fórum Cidadania Lx, responsável por uma petição que recolheu mais de 2300 assinaturas a defender a transformação do prédio numa casa-museu, tinham projectos para gerir o prédio.

“A ideia era fazer uma casa-museu interactiva e dinâmica, que funcionasse como um centro cultural, um café-concerto, em articulação com as escolas da zona e que tivesse uma biblioteca”, sustentou Ana Palma.

A eleita bloquista considerou que o processo ligado à casa de Almeida Garrett foi “mal encaminhado desde o início”, culminando “numa operação-relâmpago”.

“É incrível que comecem a partir as paredes logo quando os andaimes são colocados. Há uma intenção de levar a cabo isto tudo durante o fim-de-semana”, frisou.

Para Pedro Policarpo, do Fórum Cidadania Lx, o início da demolição da casa “é uma derrota tremenda para a cidade”. Afirmando-se “surpreendido” com a rapidez do início da demolição, o representante do movimento de lisboetas considerou que a decisão é “mais um sinal de grande preocupação e apreensão para os próximos anos de gestão camarária”.

Em comunicado, a plataforma de lisboetas reitera o seu pedido ao primeiro-ministro para que intervenha neste “processo repugnante e totalmente ignóbil”.

num país com uma diferente relação com a história e menos hipócrita teríamos concerteza a demissão de um ministro envolvido em tamanho escândalo. aqui ministro ou pato bravo é tudo igual e assim se constroí mais um condomínio para mais especulação imobiliária.

o mercado da construção em Portugal e a sua desregulação (apesar dos PDM’s e não só) é demasiado incrível para um país tão pequeno e uma cidade tão bonita (Lisboa – o caso que conheco melhor por lá viver desde que nasci).

e comentário de pessoa aparentemente tão façanhuda, pois é… não há?!? tristeza. tristeza.
haverá esperança de um dia haver alguma justificação para tamanha barbaridade? infelizmente, não creio…

A Ordem dos Arquitectos teve a apresentação do dvd ‘O Arquitecto e a Cidade Velha’ que contou com as intervenções de Catarina Alves Costa e José Manuel Costa, foi no dia 22 de Novembro, 19.00 horas no auditório da sede da Ordem dos Arquitectos.

Um documentário de Catarina Alves Costa com Álvaro Siza, Helena Albuquerque e os habitantes da cidade velha.

O documentário “O Arquitecto e a Cidade Velha” é de 2003 e foi produzido pela produtora Laranja Azul.

O dvd foi produzido pela Ordem dos Arquitectos e está à venda na sede.

Having observed their behavior in the past, I fully believe that the music industry really believes that they are doing Apple a favor and that they can cut Apple off.
If they close iTunes, iPod users will just rip their own music (and share it) leaving 0 revenue.

It’s probably just a bluff, but if the Music Industry does go through with this it would be incredibly stupid of them. I know it would be contrary to their agreements with Apple Records, but if the music execs do go ahead with this, I think Apple should start selling music directly from the musicians rather than going through the labels. They could simultaneously reduce the prices and give the musicians much more than they get under their current contracts.

and because if you really think about it, it represents a lot of things…

the global market is the most obvious, but as most of the ikea furniture, including beds, are still on wood (or based on), you can assume people still prefers sleeping on wood and in more natural “environments”…

maybe we should start an inquiry about that…

E eu que pensava que mesmo as mousses e o arroz doce é que com sorte ainda eram caseiros…

Encontrei quase por acaso umas páginas na Internet sobre a construção de sofisticados projectores de vídeo LCD caseiros. impressionante!! A maioria não é muito portátil, mas aparentemente a qualidade e características que se conseguem atingir é muito boa mesmo.

Numa das galerias de fotos, há para todos os gostos e até já vendem kits com as várias peças necessárias… muitos são em madeira e tudo, alguns bem integrados na mobília, e há um que até inclui o computador para vêr os vídeos armazenados nele.

Estas páginas encontrei-as nuns comentários numa questão proposta no Engadget.

when i did the first post i forgot some other urls that i had found.

one of them is this blog of a IT team and his business DirectNIC (old address: The Interdictor) – This journal has become the Survival of New Orleans blog. In less perilous times it was simply a blog for me to talk smack and chat with friends. we are seeing lots of people trying to help, trying to inform, trying to put people in contact, also collecting money, and unfortunately there is also people trying to get advantage of this all situation… let’s hope the good guys win.

one thing i see that for me is somehow interesting is that the ham people still is typically a good bunch of people, because we start to look in a group that works in telecommunication and helping others and you see them everywhere and in good numbers. a very good example is the VoIP team from Part-15.org, in that list you have, and just to give some names / cases, the Mark from Asterisk / Digium (the open source PBX VoIP that everyone is talking about), the Jeremy from Nufone and Mark Cohen from the Jhai project deploying Pedal Powered PCs and VoIP in Laos as well…

As an Unix/Linux sysadmin, I’ve worked at many places, compared to many people I know, who have been where they are for 5 years or more. I’ve done several kinds of jobs (thankfully, most of them related to my skills), and met many colleagues… and bosses.

And I tend to have a problem with the latter.
Not real “conflicts”, I don’t usually have them. But I’ve been in several places (and, indeed, am in one now) where everything would be almost perfect – colleagues, environment, the work itself – except for one imbecile who ruins everything – and who happens to be my boss.

the links i am publishing here are influenced by my attraction to follow one theme that i think is very very important nowadays: the use you can give to the new technologies in places that suffered some natural or not so natural devastation. i am talking about reestablishing communications, give tools to the various organizations that are trying to work side by side. all that coordination and also the talking to the base has to go trough some new channels, and for that you can use Wi-Fi, long distance Wi-Fi, Mesh networks, VoIP, satellite IP communications, and of course all the natural group-ware (web) software you can get to put all those people talking to each-other and to theirs mother-ships…

Ascii project in Amsterdam

I had already read something about the ascii project from the Internet, but now that I am trying to get to know more, it’s really getting more interesting.

for now I am just publishing some links:

ASCII has a interesting translation “Amsterdam Subversive Center for Information Interchange”.

The project involves a place (in a squat), where you can use the internet, get to learn things about it, and there is lots of recycling, use and abuse of open source.

It’s a very nice project and I intend to learn much more and maybe try to help wherever I can.

I will listen to talk at the WTH – “Community wireless NL”, Wireless networks in Amsterdam and Leiden (Rudi Van Drunen, Jaap and Rop Gonggrijp), where there will be some talk about another very interesting project… – Amsterdam Network Collective – een draadloos (internet) netwerk in Amsterdam.

We will see.

como muitas vezes quando estamos a navegar, tropeçamos em coisas muito interessantes…

desta vez cheguei à organização mouse.org que é uma iniciativa que põe os próprios miúdos com as suas capacidades informáticas a cuidar e com responsabilidades na manutenção dos equipamentos informáticos das suas escolas… é uma ideia que inclui solidariedade, responsabilidade.

em suma parece-me bonito!

It’s been a maxim in customer service for a very long time that a single angry customer cancels out the effect of twenty (or insert some 10 thousands of happy customers, simply because so many people are using the Internet for research now. We had an issue with Acer lately, started a campaign, got some great positions on general Acer related keywords on Google (thanks to a blog), and even ran some Adwords slating them. Hopefully it lost them quite a few sales.

Likewise, I had an issue at a Travelodge motel, and they did not acknowledge my complaint at all. My story (on my blog) was picked up by a newspaper here in the UK and suddenly Travelodge were very apologetic. That said, Travelodge did a very good job of accomodating us, and my faith in them is very much renewed.

But, yes, blogs really amplify opinion, especially if it gets picked up by Google nicely (There was also the case of the lock company whose locks could be picked with a biro pen, they failed to rectify the situation, and the blogosphere hit them hard.)

depois de ver este projecto só fiquei com pena que já agora não fosse VoIP e WiFi…

mas aqui têm um projecto minimamente detalhado de um telefone daqueles de plástico com os números em disco (rotary) e que na realidade é um telefone celular… – Spark Fun Electronics.
se desejado até pode ser comprado por quase 400 USD e podem desde já ver o manual de instruções em formato PDF.

“A Scottish company, Ocean Power Delivery (OPD) and it’s Norwegian backer, Norsk hydro are set install three wave powered generators 3.5 miles off the north coast of Portugal for the Portuguese renewable energy group Enersis. This will be the world’s first commercial wave powered generating system. Providing the initial three generators perform as expected, an additional thirty wave powered generators will be installed by the end of 2006. It’s estimated the wave powered generator farm will displace 6000 tonnes of carbon dioxide that would otherwise be emitted from conventional electrical generating plants.”

The Marines were part of a U.S.-led offensive to clear Fallujah of its insurgent strongholds. Sites’ video shows five men wounded from the previous day’s fighting lying on the floor of the mosque. One Marine can be heard shouting to others that a man was only “playing dead.” The Marine corporal in question appears to fire a round from his weapon into the Iraqi’s head, and another Marine says, “Dead now.”

a descrição que está nos comentários diz “tudo”:

vou ver se tenho tempo para ouvir um programa de rádio “She Be She Strike” (CBC Strike), que aconteceu aparentemente casualmente quando durante uma greve no pessoal da uma rádio, três esquimós puderam fazer a sua rádio como quiseram.

o resultado parece ter sido verdadeiramente original…

This half-hour long version of She Be She Strike contains all the great excerpts I posted earlier, from the Rolling Stones cover to the inexplicable Eskimo Marijuana segment. There’s more talking and singing over records, live in-studio music on the jews harp and guitar, a cover of Oh Susannah, an Eskimo skiffle number, Christian sprituals (!), and an incredible audio collage (which starts at the 25:40 mark) mixing Inuit throat singing games with a male Anglo singer whose voice I recognize but whose name eludes me.

a versão de 30 mins tem 28.4 MB mas parece valer a pena. as cassetes com esta emissão começaram a circular nos anos oitenta…, fico sem perceber bem, quando isto terá exactamente acontecido.
