Here’s a quick video that shows how you can use the Nokia Audio Controller AD-43 as an external microphone on a Nokia N95.
You can connect the Nokia headphones to this and then use the Audio Controller to talk while making phone calls or recording video.
The manual “Some headsets do not include a microphone.”
I’m interested in finding out if anyone has connected a microphone to this device to help record better audio when recording videos.
I know Nokia made a special microphone adapter for some AP news trials, but I have not been able to learn more about that yet.

Many mobile journalists use N95 because of its quality video vice. The problem has been that there is need of a external microphone. Here is the solution. This video shows the use of radio mic and ordinary kabel mic.

A new entry about external mic on N95, this time from shelbinator.com.
I just want to add that the difference between the terminal colors for input has to do with the different adaptors used, because shelbinator uses a nokia adaptor and Gunnar uses a generic adaptor and i suppose thats why the color/terminal used is different.

EMI is a British company, and Sony BMG is 50% owned by Bertelsmann, a German company. Convincing them to license their music to Apple and others DRM-free will create a truly interoperable music marketplace. Apple will embrace this wholeheartedly.

Not having 3G is really dummy. even in EUA everyone is talking about EVDO and they are also talking about the 1.8Mbps plus cell network. its funny because we have it in Portugal already working.

Here in the Netherlands, where I am, its much more expensive and slow unfortunately.

Connected to that but also with the concept of comunication device I was/am expecting it to do iChat AV through wifi and 3G, so it is now missing a small front camera for that.

it is also missing a usb host interface for something you could think about…, and why didn’t they predicted the use of some flash memory card… there are now sizes of 4 GB… and so it could be very helpful.

Let’s hope these and also the 4 and 8 Gb versions get upgraded to something bigger and better.

I suppose that they will me messing with the iPhone and so the commercial version can be somehow different and better.

And last but not list, as Pedro Melo questioned, how can you do some programming on it? dashboard? some new API? how?

no problem. everyone will be talking until the day it sells, and even after that we will be still talking about that…

There is one more funny detail about all this, the guy from Cingular, made some menaces about anyone who hack the device or use it with another network… I am afraid it is going to be a bigger story by next summer.

ohhh well. I am still mostly waiting for Leopard OS.

I think they’re idea is not so big but is certainly a step in the good way.

off course you have to be careful with the individual data, but that’s obvious.

the article talks about: to track in-use cell phones on Missouri highways and state roads in an effort to monitor traffic flow. Individual information will not be stored, they say — only the aggregate will be studied, using “sophisticated” math.

Encontrei quase por acaso umas páginas na Internet sobre a construção de sofisticados projectores de vídeo LCD caseiros. impressionante!! A maioria não é muito portátil, mas aparentemente a qualidade e características que se conseguem atingir é muito boa mesmo.

Numa das galerias de fotos, há para todos os gostos e até já vendem kits com as várias peças necessárias… muitos são em madeira e tudo, alguns bem integrados na mobília, e há um que até inclui o computador para vêr os vídeos armazenados nele.

the links i am publishing here are influenced by my attraction to follow one theme that i think is very very important nowadays: the use you can give to the new technologies in places that suffered some natural or not so natural devastation. i am talking about reestablishing communications, give tools to the various organizations that are trying to work side by side. all that coordination and also the talking to the base has to go trough some new channels, and for that you can use Wi-Fi, long distance Wi-Fi, Mesh networks, VoIP, satellite IP communications, and of course all the natural group-ware (web) software you can get to put all those people talking to each-other and to theirs mother-ships…

I don’t really know why it’s not happening in much more broadcasters.

And i would enjoyed if the people that organizes conferences and such, could use the iChat AV, and it can be very interesting because you can cut costs and time using it.

– o projecto de VoIP na Indonésia – VoIP Merdeka.

Uma das redes que pode eventualmente ser usada como backbone de uma rede sem fios num país em vias de desenvolvimento será a RBGAN, que tem actualmente um custo de utilização semelhante ao GPRS (GSM), sendo no entanto praticamente omnipresente e portanto isenta de roaming que é normalmente mais caro. Por ser concorrente do GPRS tende a aumentar a velocidade, que é actualmente de 144 Kbps e quem sabe talvez venha a ser comercialiazada em regime flat fee (sem custo em função do volume de tráfego e tempo).

Por curiosidade no google encontrei um professor Jens Jakobsen da universidade Aalborg da Dinamarca que tem uma proposta curiosa. E que cita as palavras de Kofi Annan:

The new information and communications technologies are among the driving forces of globalization. They are bringing people together, and bringing decision makers unprecedented new tools for development. Leiam este artigo no Slashdot – onde ficamos a saber que os computadores pessoais utilizados nos hospitais e que controlam algumas máquinas com tarefas críticas como as que mantêm uma pessoa viva ou lhe dão radiações prescritas… agora podemos imaginar casos em que por erro do programa o paciente recebe um “pouco” de radiação em excesso… que desagradável no mínimo!
E se aliarmos o facto de as empresas que vendem esses equipamentos médicos impedirem a actualização (remendos de segurança, como o actual SP2 – service pack 2) dos sistemas operativos e de os hospitais por ser mais fácil colocarem essas máquinas numa rede local (LAN) cheia de outras máquinas de secretária… podemos imaginar a proliferação de problemas (vírus e outros).

Cada vez mais pessoas nos EUA estão a fazer telefonemas através da Internet. A firma Vonage, que oferece serviços telefónicos por VoIP (“Voice over Internet Protocol”), anunciou este mês ter atingido os 155 mil assinantes.

Através do VoIP, é possível usar ligações de Internet de banda larga para fazer chamadas telefónicas. A principal vantagem: todas as chamadas são locais, e os custos para o utilizador são muito reduzidos. A tecnologia tem a potencialidade de ser o “Napster dos telefones”: um processo que torna o acto de telefonar tendencialmente gratuito.

A possibilidade de uma revolução no negócio dos telefones já levou a indústria de telecomunicações americana a reagir – grandes empresas como a Verizon ou a AT & T preparam os seus próprios serviços de VoIP.

O mundo das telecomunicações mudou muito na última década, mas os telefones continuam a funcionar mais ou menos da mesma maneira: o som é convertido em sinais electrónicos transportados através de um circuito dedicado, a linha telefónica.

Através do VoIP, o som é transformado em dados digitais, transportado através de redes de Internet tal como o e-mail ou a World Wide Web. É preciso ter uma ligação de banda larga – mas nos EUA já há 22 milhões de lares com “broadband”, e em alguns países a margem de penetração da Net de banda larga ainda é maior. Em Portugal, havia 500 mil clientes de banda larga registados no final do ano passado, notando-se uma forte tendência de crescimento.

Através do VoIP, deixa de haver chamadas interurbanas. Nos EUA, as chamadas locais já são gratuitas na maior parte dos serviços de rede fixa; os telefonemas caros são os de longa distância. Com VoIP, é irrelevante a localização dos interlocutores; uma chamada de Nova Iorque para Los Angeles tem o mesmo custo que uma chamada de um lado da rua para o outro.

Como qualquer tecnologia incipiente, o VoIP tem problemas. A qualidade do som ainda não é perfeita. As chamadas dependem da estabilidade da ligação à Internet. Pode não ser possível fazer chamadas para os serviços de emergência, e em caso de “blackout” da rede de electricidade o VoIP não funciona. E a Internet é vulnerável a ataques de “hackers”.

Mas firmas como a Vonage têm a expectativa de que o serviço melhore à medida que a tecnologia atinja a sua maturidade. E há claramente interesse no VoIP – a Vonage atingiu rapidamente 155 mil assinantes, e baixou o preço mensal do seu serviço para 30 dólares (26 euros), um custo muito competitivo na maioria dos mercados americanos.

Se não os podes vencer…

Um dos problemas básicos do VoIP – a necessidade de estar junto a uma ligação à Internet de banda larga – já está a ser resolvido. A Motorola, um dos líderes no mercado de telemóveis, vai introduzir um novo aparelho capaz de captar sinais de VoIP através de redes Wi-Fi (sem fios). Ou seja, em locais com cobertura Wi-Fi será possível utilizar telemóveis com VoIP.

A Vonage anunciou o seu novo plano de preços com uma forte campanha publicitária. Ao mesmo tempo, esta pequena firma aumentou os seus canais de distribuição através de um contrato com a rede de lojas de electrónica Radio Shack, que vai vender o serviço de Vonage em quatro mil estabelecimentos nos EUA.

Por enquanto, a Vonage é o principal serviço de VoIP nos EUA. As grandes empresas telefónicas americanas podiam ter reagido à Vonage da mesma forma que a indústria discográfica reagiu ao Napster, pressionando-o com processos judiciais – mas, em vez disso, o sector parece estar a seguir a estratégia do “se não os consegues vencer, junta-te a eles”.

A AT & T já tem um serviço de VoIP; a Verizon lança o seu em Junho. “À medida que os consumidores vão percebendo como é fácil fazer chamadas através da uma ligação à Internet de banda larga – basicamente é preciso apenas um adaptador para um telefone normal – as taxas de adesão vão subir significativamente”, disse o analista do sector Jon Arnold ao “site” NewsFactor.

A analogia com o Napster pode ainda ir mais longe. Os dois programadores que inventaram o Kazaa (uma rede de “download” de ficheiros pela Internet, muito popular depois do encerramento do Napster) têm o seu projecto de VoIP. O serviço dos criadores do Kazaa chama-se Skype, e está localizado no Luxemburgo. O Skype ainda está em fase de testes, mas já tem 5,5 milhões de utilizadores.

Esta proposta comercial é muito gira… mas para mim o que vai ainda mais transtornar as regras do mercado actualmente em vigor, será o triple-play. Em frança já existe – denomina-se Freebox da Free, mas esta ideia, ainda vai dar que falar na nossa Europa, e inevitávelmente em Portugal!

Falo, neste caso, de tecnologia ADSL que nos traz tipicamente, acesso à Internet a 1Mbit, mais telefone em VoIP e ainda 60 canais digitais de televisão, sem esqueçer o vídeo a pedido (video-on-demand).

nota: Pela mão da Cabovisão já temos em Portugal o conceito, apesar de utilizar tecnologia mais antiga (não é VoIP e usa o cabo coaxial).

Como é possível que ninguém se lembre de assacar as culpas a essa incrível empresa que enriquece e enriqueceu a olhos vistos, sem efectivamente conseguir proteger os seus clientes e utilizadores, é inacreditável como isto acontece numa escala tão grande.

Não admira que já haja empresas e organizações com mais espírito crítico que preferem mudar para os sistemas operativos com código aberto, Open Source, tipicamente Linux, permitindo-lhes no fundo sobreviver a estas vagas de vírus idiotas.

O mais popular motor de pesquisa na Internet vai passar a oferecer a maior caixa de correio electrónico da rede, desafiando os líderes Microsoft e Yahoo. A forma como a Google quer financiar a operação já está a ser contestada

Quando o anúncio foi feito, no dia 1 de Abril, não foram poucos os que pensaram que se tratava de mais uma mostra do apurado sentido de humor de quem manda na Google Inc.- uma mentirinha para brincar com os mais crédulos: a empresa criada há cinco anos por Larry Page e Sergey Brin anunciava que iria lançar um novo serviço gratuito de correio electrónico no mercado, o Gmail, disponibilizando para cada conta um giga byte inteirinho de espaço de armazenamento. Parecia mentira, parecia. Mas não era.

Com o período de teste já em curso, e para o qual foram convidados mil utilizadores, a Google – proprietária do mais popular motor de pesquisa da Internet – está a entrar por terrenos dominados em pleno pela Yahoo, pelo Hotmail da Microsoft Service Network e outros portais web. Uma área, a do correio electrónico, que é de longe a mais popular de toda a Internet, e da qual tanto a Yahoo como a MSN carecem para se afirmarem como pontos de destino: gerar tráfego nos seus portais, conquistar novos utilizadores e aliciá-los a disponibilizarem aquela informação pessoal que tanto atrai os anunciantes. Wayne Rosing, vice-presidente da Google para a área de engenharia informática, recusa a ideia de que a empresa esteja a querer transformar-se naquele tipo de portais, em aberta concorrência com a MSN e a Yahoo: “A razão pela qual estamos a oferecer este novo serviço prende-se com o facto de fazer parte da nossa missão organizar e apresentar toda a informação que há no mundo, e o email é uma parcela dessa informação que não está actualmente bem organizada.”

Mas não há como evitar olhar para este passo como uma espécie de “revanche” da Google Inc., depois de a Yahoo ter justamente divulgado que vai combater mais fortemente no terreno dos motores de pesquisa, em directa competição com a velha amiga Google, e mais ainda após a Microsoft ter anunciado que pretende introduzir um concorrencial motor de pesquisa na versão de 2006 do seu sistema operativo, que responde pelo nome de código “Longhorn”.

Por enquanto, a Google não quer anunciar quando é que o Gmail será totalmente disponibilizado, pelo menos enquanto estiver a decorrer este período de experimentação. Mas já foram sendo dados indícios que o novo serviço de email será uma realidade para todos dentro de algumas semanas (www.gmail.com).

Capacidade e privacidade

À semelhança do que acontece com o email da Yahoo (perto de 200 milhões de contas de email activas) ou o Hotmail da MSN (este com 170 milhões), o Gmail também permitirá aos utilizadores desenvolver pesquisas dentro da própria conta de correio electrónico – mas este é um aspecto em que a Google espera bater a concorrência com um produto mais fiável, mais rápido e eficiente, sustentado na mesma tecnologia, de buscas por tópicos, que faz do motor de pesquisa da empresa para as páginas de Internet o incontornável líder neste segmento de mercado.

Outro trunfo ainda: enquanto o Hotmail oferece dois mega bytes de armazenamento gratuito (e cobra quase 40 dólares anuais por 100 mega bytes) e a Yahoo disponibiliza quatro mega bytes gratuitos (e cobra quase 50 dólares por ano por 100 megas), a Google abre as portas a um inteirinho e enorme giga byte (mil mega bytes) de espaço grátis de armazenamento de correio electrónico. Isto corresponde a cerca de meio milhão de páginas de emails. Ou a mais de 10 mega bytes dentro de cada email, o que é muito mais do que os dois líderes de mercado permitem ter no total da caixa. O intuito é o de permitir aos utilizadores do serviço jamais terem que apagar mensagens nas contas do Gmail. “Os emails podem ficar ali para sempre. Podem ser organizados, pesquisados, e o utilizador encontrará sempre mesmo as mensagens mais antigas. Acreditamos que o utilizador deve poder armazenar todos os seus emails”, explicou Wayne Rosing.

Segundo um estudo interno da Google, divulgado pelo New York Times, cada giga byte armazenado – ou seja, cada conta de email desta dimensão aberta pelos utilizadores – custará à empresa cerca de dois dólares, e que este custo poderá ser coberto sem grandes dificuldades através de publicidade. E é aqui, no modelo de negócio do Gmail, que “a porca torce o rabo”: a Google pretende financiar o projecto e ganhar dinheiro com o serviço através de um processo em que serão integradas mensagens publicitárias nos emails em sintonia com o conteúdo dos mesmos, através do programa AdSense. Por exemplo alguém que envie um email referindo-se a uma determinada banda de música terá o email acompanhado por um anúncio a promover os CDs ou os concertos dessa banda. Perante os inevitáveis receios que se prendem com as questões de privacidade – e com activistas pela defesa destes direitos já a apresentarem queixas contra a Google – Kate Burns, directora do Ad Sales do Google do Reino Unido, garante que todo o processo será desenvolvido pelo software e não por empregados da Google.

A maior parte dos exemplos são de ataques DoS, o que quer dizer que as empresas de software e hardware (firmware) têm que tomar mais atenção ao aspecto da segurança.

Na prática o estudo praticamente só se efectua com teste a equipamentos da Cisco, e até arriscaria dizer que a Cisco quase que os concebeu para serem usados em redes privadas e não na grande Internet.

Espero que as empresas mais recentes neste mercado entrem já com outros cuidados nesse mercado. é uma questão para a qual devermos estar despertos.

Final Thouhts (Video Codec Shootout)

Though we have certainly examined these four video codecs extensively, this article can by no means be considered the be-all, end-all on their relative merits. There are dozens of parameters and options when it comes to encoding video and, as thorough as we have been, there is much left unexplored. Variable bitrate and dual-pass encoding, for example, are common and useful features we didn’t cover here – unfortunately, they’re not entirely available in QuickTime 6.5 Pro for Sorenson3 or MPEG-4 encoding. That said, home video encoding is a slow and laborious process already, without waiting around twice as long for two-pass or variable bitrate encoding.

Obviously, nobody wants to wait hours to encode video, but that’s exactly what you’ll have to tolerate on a modern home PC. Dropping the resolution of your encoded clip naturally speeds things up a lot, but you’re still not going to do much better than real-time speed, so expect those home movie projects to bog down your computer for an hour or two if you don’t opt to trade off quality for performance. If you have a fair amount of video to encode, we recommend using a program that will let you queue up several clips and batch-encode them while you sleep. When it comes to speed, both of the QuickTime 6.5 codecs performed great, although we wouldn’t recommend either of them due to their less-than-ideal quality and lack of adoption in consumer electronics devices. If you’re looking to make video that will play on future DVD players, portable video players, and home media gateways, WMV9 is probably your best bet. A great many CE products shipping this year and next will support it. DivX has a reasonable amount of CE adoption as well, and may be the better choice for playback on a PC, as encoding times are much shorter and the quality is comparable.
